Mama Made A Movie Star, 2021
Mama Made a Movie Star is the outcome of a performative ritual. These domestic dance video recordings documenting my exhausted celebration of birth and postpartum recovery, were made daily at home as soon as possible after 8.24PM (the time of birth). Their daily-ness slowed down as exhaustion set in and adrenaline wore off. The series of almost-daily videos are stitched together and fast-forwarded, and ends with my 299-day-old childʼs first accidental video recording, also made on my phone camera. In these recordings, I was trying to get back to the sense of my body as my house, after being my baby’s house for a long time. I was also filming in my home, where suddenly I almost had literally zero space for myself and my work.
This coincides with the explosion of pandemic-induced home-based dance films created by dancers worldwide.
